Cantaloupe

Cantaloupes (also known as muskmelon and rockmelons) like all melons, like it hot. Because of this, seeds should be sown in hills 2 weeks after the last frost date when the soil is warmed. In short season areas cantaloupe seeds can be started indoors 3-4 weeks before being planted outside. Be sure to plant cantaloupes and any other melon seeds in a peat pot that can be planted in the ground so as to not disturb the roots. If you start them indoors you will need to harden them off by gradually adjusting them to the outdoor environment. When choosing a location to plant cantaloupes make sure you allow for plenty of space for them to grow. You’ll want to avoid disturbing the vines too much as doing so can cause uneven ripening of the fruit. If you don’t have much room in your garden you can grow cantaloupe on a trellis supporting the fruit with old pantyhose or some other kind of mesh netting. Cantaloupe, as well as other melons, are great companion plants with corn. The melons can grow in amongst the corn stalks deterring animals and reducing weeds. Growing them together will combine two space taking crops. Reduce watering when fruit are the size of tennis balls to concentrate the sugars in the flesh.

Gardening Tips

Many factors can affect the germination and growth of your garden or flower seeds. Try some of these suggestions to improve your seeds' chance of success:

  • Sometimes some seeds should soak in water for 4-6 hours before planting seeds in ground.
  • Store seeds in cool dry location to prevent seeds germinating prematurely.
  • Water freshly planted seeds or newly transplanted plants heavily.
  • Use mulch around base of developing plants to prevent weeds.
  • Compost your grasses, leaves etc before trying to grow vegetables or flowers that need rich soil.
