CarrotsCarrots are best grown in a loose fertile soil. Where soil is rocky or compacted the soil needs to be amended with well-rotted compost that can be made yourself in a backyard composter. Be careful not to use fresh compost or manure as too much nitrogen will cause carrots to fork. Work soil deeply ( 6-8 inches) for varieties such as Scarlet Nantes and Danvers 126. You might also consider using shorter varieties of carrots such as Little Finger in rocky or more compact. The shorter variety can also be grown in containers where the soil can be easily made ideal as well.
