Carrots

Carrots are best grown in a loose fertile soil. Where soil is rocky or compacted the soil needs to be amended with well-rotted compost that can be made yourself in a backyard composter. Be careful not to use fresh compost or manure as too much nitrogen will cause carrots to fork. Work soil deeply ( 6-8 inches) for varieties such as Scarlet Nantes and Danvers 126. You might also consider using shorter varieties of carrots such as Little Finger in rocky or more compact. The shorter variety can also be grown in containers where the soil can be easily made ideal as well.

Sow carrot seeds directly in the garden after the risk of a hard frost. When sowing carrot seed it’s advisable to spread the seeds sparingly as carrots planted too closely together will impede carrots from reaching maximum size. When the seeds emerge, thin the seedlings to ¾” and as they mature thin them to 3 inches. They take 2-3 weeks to germinate so don’t give up hope when it takes a while. Be sure to keep them well watered while you wait for them to come up. Patience will be rewarded. Carrots are usually harvested when carrots reach ¾ inches in diameter at the upper end. They can be harvested as they are ready but can be left in the ground for longer.

Gardening Tips

Many factors can affect the germination and growth of your garden or flower seeds. Try some of these suggestions to improve your seeds' chance of success:

  • Sometimes some seeds should soak in water for 4-6 hours before planting seeds in ground.
  • Store seeds in cool dry location to prevent seeds germinating prematurely.
  • Water freshly planted seeds or newly transplanted plants heavily.
  • Use mulch around base of developing plants to prevent weeds.
  • Compost your grasses, leaves etc before trying to grow vegetables or flowers that need rich soil.
