Garden Cauliflower Varieties: Vegetable Cauliflower Seeds

Cauliflower is gaining popularity in our health conscious society being used as a replacement for higher carbohydrate vegetables. It is a cool weather crop. The seeds may be direct sown for a fall crop but do much better for a spring crop started indoors in seedling trays 4-6 weeks prior to the last frost date. A week or two prior to planting outside harden off the seedlings off by putting them outside in increasing intervals to adjust them to outside temperatures and natural sunlight.

Cauliflower, like their close relatives, broccoli, cabbage and brussel sprouts are heavy feeders so the soil should be amended with compost a week or two before you start hardening off the seedlings. Most of the problems cauliflower has are with soil borne diseases. To avoid these, rotate cole crops (cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, and broccoli) every three years with vegetables like peas and beans which will add nutrients to the soil. When the button or curd is the size of an egg pull the side leaves up around the head to blanch it, making sure that neither the leaves nor the head is wet. Some newer varieties such as Snowball Y Improved are self-blanching which means that the leaves will curl up around the head eliminating the need to pull the leaves up manually.

Gardening Tips

Many factors can affect the germination and growth of your garden or flower seeds. Try some of these suggestions to improve your seeds' chance of success:

  • Sometimes some seeds should soak in water for 4-6 hours before planting seeds in ground.
  • Store seeds in cool dry location to prevent seeds germinating prematurely.
  • Water freshly planted seeds or newly transplanted plants heavily.
  • Use mulch around base of developing plants to prevent weeds.
  • Compost your grasses, leaves etc before trying to grow vegetables or flowers that need rich soil.
