Chard Seeds: Grow ChardChard is not only delicious but this nutrient filled, heat and cold weather tolerant plant is also very beautiful. Colors range from white (such as Fordhook Giant Swiss Chard) to deep red (such as Ruby Red Swiss Chard) and everything in between (such as Bright Lights Swiss Chard). Chard can be planted as soon as the ground is workable and warmed to 50 degrees. They can tolerate light spring frosts but it’s a good idea to wait to plant the ‘Ruby Red’ and ‘Rhubarb’ varieties until after the last frost as they tend to bolt and go to seed when they are exposed to freezing temperatures. Chard is not particular about soil so long as it drains well, but like all vegetables will benefit from compost being mixed in the soil. It can even tolerate light shade. It is important to make sure that Chard is well watered in the heat of the summer as they can become bitter. Mulching the plant around its roots will help retain moisture and hold down weeds. Outer leaves can be harvested when they reach 6 inches tall and continue harvesting outer leaves throughout the season. They can also be harvested by cutting the plants 3 from the ground and wait for them to grow back. This is a good technique when the outer leaves become tough.
