Melons, like peppers, like it hot. So it’s important to wait until after the risk of frost to plant any melon, it’s even a good idea to wait 2 to three weeks after the last frost date for your area. Melon seeds can be direct sown in hills but when your growing season is short you can also plant them inside a week or two before you plant them in the garden. If you do start them early start them in a peat pot or some other container that you can plant in the ground as melons don’t like their roots to be disturbed at all. One important thing to take into consideration when planting melons is the space needed to grow them. Most varieties need 4 to 6 feet of space between plants. It’s also important to leave the vines undisturbed as it could lead to uneven ripening. There are alternatives to dedicating a large area of your garden solely to melons. One is growing melons on a trellis, being sure to support the melons with something like pantyhose or netting. Another is companion planting them with corn which is another large space user in the garden. Melons, like other vegetables need about an inch of water per week but as the plant starts setting fruit reduce watering in half to concentrate the sugar in the flesh.
