Okra, otherwise known as Gumbo, is a southern cooking treat. But despite its popularity in warmer climates this crop does not need a particularly long growing season. It is a fast grower and matures in 50- 60 days.

Seeds should be started in warm soil after the risk of frost has past. Plant seeds in rows 6 to 8 inches apart with the rows 2 feet apart. When the plants begin to branch thin them to their final spacing of 18-24 inches. Four to Six plants are usually enough for most families, or way too much for other families. It is something you need to decide for yourself. Okra plants are very drought tolerant so they do not need much water save for the hottest days. They should be harvested at least every other day as it only requires only 3 to 4 days to go from open flower to harvest. Left on the plant they become stringy very quickly. Leaving pods on the plant will reduce production as well. Okra is susceptible to aphids and care should be taken to take care of the problem before it becomes an infestation. Okra plants are easily cross pollinated so if you are going to save seeds for further use plant only one variety.

I would have never believed there was such a difference in the seeds purchased from different places. But you've made a believer of me!
Thanks for a great product.
Delivery was quick and the product was in perfect condition.
The germination rate was fantastic for both varieties (95%+) much better than I am used to from other seed suppliers.

Gardening Tips

Many factors can affect the germination and growth of your garden or flower seeds. Try some of these suggestions to improve your seeds' chance of success:

  • Sometimes some seeds should soak in water for 4-6 hours before planting seeds in ground.
  • Store seeds in cool dry location to prevent seeds germinating prematurely.
  • Water freshly planted seeds or newly transplanted plants heavily.
  • Use mulch around base of developing plants to prevent weeds.
  • Compost your grasses, leaves etc before trying to grow vegetables or flowers that need rich soil.
