The Luffa sponge gourd is actually grown for use as a sponge. The unique plant has flesh that is much like a zucchini early in its development but becomes like a sponge as the fruit is left to mature. A great variety because of its decorative and culinary uses.

Planting instructions:Gourds can be started outdoors only in warmer areas. Colder areas will require you to start seeds indoors in large containers.
Care:Gourds thrive when vines are supported. Keep fruits off ground for rounded types like birdhouse or luffa. Others like Turks Turban should remain on ground to retain their unique shape.
Harvesting: Cut gourds off of vine with sharp knife. Leave as much steam as possible when harvesting, excess may be trimmed off after drying.
Nutritional Value: Gourds are generally grown for their decorative value.
Collecting Seed: Dry gourds completely and scrape out pulp and seeds. Dry seeds further before storing.
